This trip covers Georgia/ Abkhazia - a mix of natural beauty, hilltop churches, meandering cobbled streets, mountain scapes, a wine region and Soviet influences. Still unspoiled by modern tourism, yet retaining its authentic character, that is what makes this region an amazing place to visit. After first three days in Tbilisi and the near by provinces we visit an unrecognized country of Abkhazia or as locals call it- Apsny, meaning the country of the soul. A mysterious fantasy land hidden away in war-torn stories and unmarked on maps you will find yourself in a land of beauty, friendship and history.

GEORGIA EXTENSION

DAY 1 - Tbilisi

Arrive at Tbilisi & check into Envoy hostel Tbilisi
Walking tour of old Tbilisi, oldest church in Georgia
Baraholka, a Soviet trinkets market, chance to buy stamps, pins, medals, and other cool stuff
Cable car to Tbilisi castle for a great overview of the city
Tbilisi Sulphur Baths, waterfalls
Overnight at Envoy Tbilisi

DAY 2 - Gori

Drive to Gori, Stalin’s birth city. Visit Stalin’s museum.
Visit Uplistsikhe cave city, a 3,000 year old settlement
Transfer back to Tbilisi, overnight in Envoy Hostel
Free time or out to first Irish bar in Georgia

DAY 3 - Kazbegi

Morning drive towards Russian border near Mount Kazbeg (5,035m) area
Visit beautiful Trinity monastery with fantastic views of the mount Kazbeg
Lunch / cooking lesson at a traditional Georgian house with over 20 dishes, home wine and vodka
Transfer back to Tbilisi
Depart by overnight train to Zugdidi, western Georgia

ABKHAZIA EXTENSION

DAY 4 - Sukhumi

Depart Zugdidi to Georgian side border, check in with police
Horse carriage ride across a 1km bridge, a no man's demilitarized zone
Abkhazian border, passport control, customs
Transfer to Sukhumi, the capital of the breakaway republic
Walking tour of Sukhumi, sea promenade, port, Greek ruins
Diner at traditional Abkhazian restaurant
Bowling at a local night club
Overnight at Akirtava hotel

DAY 5 - Lake Ritza

Breakfast and a scenic drive along coast towards New Afon
Train ride into a New Afon Cave, one of the largest caves in the world
Visit beautiful Psyrtskha Train Station nestled in between high limestone cliffs
Climb atop of the hill to a beautiful New Afon monastery built in the 1880s by Tsar Alexander III of Russia
Quick snack for some Khachapuri and local wine
Mountain drive towards Lake Ritza with stopx at a Blue Lake, and various gorges
Visit beautiful Lake Ritza with an amazing view of the high peaks
Diner at Lake Ritza in a traditional Abkhaz house for lake trout and a wild game
Drive back to Sukhumi, overnight at Inter Akirtava hotel
